Between You and Me · Girls 9–13
Most girls in India find out what a period is from their mother, and a great many mothers found out on the day it happened to them. This is a set of three books built to sit in that gap: plain, unembarrassed, and arriving before the day it is needed rather than after.
Three full-colour books, 96 pages plus a four-page tracker section, printed at ISO B5 — a proper book size, not a pamphlet. Roughly sixty per cent explanation and forty per cent blank space, because this is a book she writes in. There are checklists to tick, trackers to fill, questions to answer and a page to sign and date.
That is the whole design idea. A book that is read once gets read once. A book with her own handwriting in it gets kept — and gets picked up again on the day it is actually needed.
Not three reading levels — three subjects at one age. She can open Book 2 the week she needs it without finishing Book 1 first.
Book 1
Everything that starts happening before the period does
By the end she knows what is starting, why, and that her timing is her own.
What’s starting
Why it happens
Taking care of me
Book 2
What happens, and exactly what to do
She knows it is not an emergency, it is not dirty, and she has a plan.
What a period is
What to do
Living with it
Book 3
Feelings, and your rules
Her body is hers, her feelings are real, and she is allowed to ask.
My feelings
My body is mine
My rules
The part that makes it her
Four pages at the back of Book 2. Six month grids, a table that teaches her to count her own gap, and one line she writes in her own handwriting: my gap is usually about ___ days. There is a small cut-out card for her school bag.
It does not promise to predict anything. Teenage cycles commonly run anywhere from 21 to 45 days and stay irregular for a year or two — that is normal. A tracker that implies she can predict her period, and then cannot, teaches her that she is broken. This one says so on the page.
For you, not just for her
Not an afterword. A designed spread near the back of each book, set in different type, written to a mother, an aunt, an elder sister or a father — including the one who was never properly told any of this either, and feels slightly embarrassed about that.
How to start
Actual opening sentences, so you do not have to invent them on the spot.
What not to say
The handful of well-meant phrases that close the conversation down.
Being awkward is fine
Being present matters more than being smooth. The book says so, to you.
Nothing in the child’s pages assumes you are in the room. A girl reading this alone at eleven at night can act on every single instruction in it. The parent pages add to that; they are never the thing holding it up.
Worth knowing before you buy, because it is the part most parents ask about.
Not one of the three names the subject. No cartoon diagram, no word a classmate could read across a desk — just the series name, a quiet descriptor and an illustration. She can leave any of these three on her desk, in her school bag, or on a shared shelf without it announcing anything about her.
The spine and the back carry the plain description, so you can find the right one on a shelf. The front is built for her.
Parents of a 9–11 year old
The core case. Average age of first period in India is now around twelve and falling — a book pitched at twelve is late for half its readers.
The mother who was never told
You are not expected to already know this. Two pages in every book are written for you.
Fathers raising a daughter
Especially single fathers. The parent pages assume you may be starting from zero, and do not make you feel foolish for it.
The girl it already started for
Book 2 has a page written specifically for the girl reading it afterwards. She has not missed anything.
There is a boys’ set — the same three-book structure, written for boys 10–14, with a growth chart where this one has a cycle tracker. Same design, same size, same care, the same two parent pages — deliberately the same colours on Book 3 of both. If you have a son and a daughter, the shelf itself makes the point that they are being treated the same.
Use the edition switcher at the top of this page to see the boys’ set.
A book she reads once helps once. A book she writes in belongs to her.

Health information for general education only. It does not replace advice from a doctor. Each book carries a red-flag page telling her exactly when to speak to an adult or a doctor, and India’s child helpline — 1098, or 112, the emergency number.
