By the next festival, this one is a blur. This is the book where a child writes it down: ten festivals, every year for three years. It explains none of them. It asks who came, what was eaten, and what went wrong and made everyone laugh. For ages 7 to 12, in English.

Every festival has eight pages. Two are done once. The other six come back every year, for three years.
The ten: Diwali · Holi · Raksha Bandhan · Janmashtami · Ganesh Chaturthi · Navratri · one of your own · Eid · Christmas · the child’s birthday.
For a child who can write two lines, and for the family that wants those two lines kept.
The questions are small on purpose: who came, what was eaten, what went wrong. The lines are wide enough for a child’s handwriting.
Every festival has one question for someone older. Their answer goes into the book, and stays there.
For a birthday, a festival, or a cousin in another city. It is opened ten times a year for three years.
It does not explain the festivals
Each one gets two lines. The rest is the child’s own account of what happened at home.
It is not finished in a week
Two thirds of it is empty on the first day. It fills up over three years, and that is the point.
It does not need photos
Every page is complete without one. A photo is a bonus, not a rule.
It is not in colour inside
The inside is black and white. The colour comes from the child.
A festival is loud for three days and gone by the next one. Ask a child in March who came home for the last one and you get a shrug. This book is where they write it down, the morning after: who was there, what they wore, what they ate, what they made.
And one question no adult asks: “One thing that went wrong and made everyone laugh.” It is the line a family ends up reading out loud.
Every festival comes back three times: this year, next year, the year after. The three sit next to each other, so in three years one turn of the page shows the same child at seven, eight and nine. From the second year there is one more question: “What was different from last year.”
The first rule printed in the book is “Fill it in after the festival, not during it.” Nobody enjoys a festival while holding a pen.
In its own words: “This book is not finished until three years from now. That is the point.”
