Vyaktigat Vikas Spiritual · Sumiran
Writing the Name is the oldest and simplest form of devotion. The hand writes, the eyes see, the mind repeats. Sumiran is five books — Ram, Radha, Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and Jai Mata Di — each in its own colour, with its own meaning, its own story and its own aarti.
A page of the Ram book (handwriting shown as an example), and a page of Om Namah Shivaya.
Every page of the Ram and Radha books has 108 cells — one page, one mala. The Om Namah Shivaya and Jai Mata Di pages have 54 cells — half a mala. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya is a long mantra, so its pages have 36 long cells. The foot of every page tells you how many you have written so far, and how many malas. You never have to count.
Each book is for one Name or mantra, in its own colour. The whole set has room for 36,000 Names.
The Name of Maryada Purushottam
108 names = 1 mala on every page · 10,800 in the book · 100 malas
The Name at the heart of Braj
108 names = 1 mala on every page · 10,800 in the book · 100 malas
Shiva’s five-syllable mantra
54 japa = ½ mala on every page · 5,400 in the book · 50 malas
Vishnu’s twelve-syllable mantra
36 japa = ⅓ mala on every page · 3,600 in the book · 33⅓ malas
The jaikara of the Mother
54 japa = ½ mala on every page · 5,400 in the book · 50 malas
Book 4: what Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya means, and the story of Dhruva (Bhagavata Purana, Skandha 4).
Knowing what the Name means helps the mind settle on it. Every book opens with the Name or mantra explained word by word, then its own story, with the scripture it comes from named. It closes with the aarti or stuti of its deity.
Every book ends with the aarti or stuti of its deity — in Devanagari with the Roman spelling beside it, to sing after you write. And it begins with how to write: where to sit, when, with which pen, and what to do when the book is full.
On the first page, write your sankalp — your name, the day you begin, malas a day, and for whom. On the last page, the completion page — when it was finished and the total written. A finished book is never thrown away: offer it at a temple, deposit it at a Ram Naam Bank, or keep it with respect in your puja corner.
Pick one time each day — after your morning bath, or after lighting the evening diya.
Say the Name once before you begin.
Repeat it in your mind each time you write it. Don’t hurry.
Missed a day? That is all right — begin again from where you stopped.
Which pen should I use?
A ball pen. Gel ink can spread on this paper. Blue, black or red — whatever you like.
What do I do when a book is full?
Never throw it away. Offer it at a temple, deposit it at a Ram Naam Bank, or keep it with respect in your puja corner. This is also written in every book.
Can I write in English or my own script?
Yes. Write the Name in whichever script you are comfortable with. The Name is the same.
Can children write in it?
Yes. The cells are big, so small hands write comfortably too. Just teach them to write slowly and neatly.
How much should I write each day?
As much as you can with your heart in it. Even one mala a day is plenty. The habit matters more than the number.
Are the inside pages in colour?
The covers are in colour. Inside, the pages are printed in black on white paper, so your writing stands out clearly.
Will this fulfil a wish?
Sumiran is a practice of devotion — of resting the mind on one Name. We do not promise any result or miracle.
The stories are retold in our own words, each with the scripture it comes from named. The aartis and stutis are traditional texts. Sumiran — Vyaktigat Vikas Spiritual.
