By the second trimester almost everything she reads is about someone else. What to eat for the baby. What to buy for the baby. What to be afraid of, for the baby.
There is nothing about the baby in this box. It is sixty small things to do with her own hands, for ten minutes, and then put down.
Sixty activities across the two. Every one is drawn in a single colour on uncoated paper, so any pen works.
The signature activity is the simplest one in the box. "Write the same number with both hands at the same time. Start with 5, then 10, then 100." Two columns, left hand and right hand, and the numbers get harder as they go.
Other cards work the same way: trace two curves at the same speed, move each forefinger over its own row of shapes, run both forefingers out from the centre of a double spiral. They are awkward the first time. That is the whole point of them.
Some evenings two hands is too much. The book is the quieter half — a mandala with the instruction "colour one in a sitting; there is no right way and nothing to finish", a maze drawn so that every one is different and every one is solvable, a word search built from the words of this particular season.
One page is a grid of twelve weeks — the length of a trimester. "One tick for every day you took ten minutes for yourself. Twelve weeks, no streak to keep."
Nothing in here is scored, timed against yesterday, or compared week to week. There is one page called Today I Could, Today I Couldn't, with a column for each — "some weeks the right column is longer, and that is the honest answer."
Most people arrive with something for the baby. This is the one that is for her — which is why nearly everyone who is given it says some version of the same thing: nobody else brought me anything.
